I believe RetroGameRepairShop has an actual “drop in” battery mod that’s really good. I guess you just solder this small board to the battery and it just drops into the SP battery port with no actual modding to the SP itself. Their about $13 vs ruining a Gameboy PCB. 1. It only works with the original sp's battery I'm pretty sure the garage sale battery is just dead. 2. I've cleaned it pretty well, the whole unit had what looked to be coke spilled on it, but I was able to clean most of it off. There's some junk in there but none of it appears to be on the contacts. I chose it as I noticed folks were adding micro usb ports [to their SPs] and this outputs ~5v 500ma (typical USB smartphone charger) and has a smaller footprint from other QI diy kits. I guess other chargers heat up more due to fast charging, different amp output, or poor quality components. 2. USB outputs DC 5V standard but the amps vary from one adapter to the next. If it's 320ma or close to it it should be fine.
